The Stations of the Cross - Pictures by the Benedictine Sisters of Turvey Abbey

Please use these pictures and comments to meditate on the journey of Christ to the Cross & his Resurrection.

Use this on Tuesday 7th April at 7.30pm and on Good Friday April 10th at 2pm

to be with Jesus for His final hour on the Cross.

Lord, in this time of quiet, help our minds and hearts to be open to your living presence. Pardon our sins and permit us to accompany you on your journey to Calvary, that we may truly be drawn through your blessed Passion and Death to the saving power of the Resurrection. Amen.

Work your way through the stations from number 1 to 16. Take your time.  As you say the name of each station, follow with these words:

We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you, because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

Then use the words on each accompanying panel. After final Station 16, say the Lord’s Prayer followed by the concluding prayer under the panels.

1. Jesus is condemned to death.

‘For our sake God made the sinless one into sin, so that in him we might become the goodness of God’ 2 Corinthians 5 v 21

Lord, we pray for all who are treated unjustly.

2. Jesus takes up his cross.

‘If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.’ Mark 8 v 34

Lord we pray for strength to bear our cross, knowing that it is your cross we are carrying.

3. Jesus falls the first time.

‘He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross.’ 1 Peter 2 v 24

‘Your sins are forgiven….stand up’

Mark 2 v 5, 11

Lord, when we fall, help us to stand up and walk once more with you.

4. Jesus meets his mother.

Simeon warned Mary, ‘a sword will pierce your own soul.’ We think of families’ sacrificial love.

Heavenly Father, we pray that, as on the way of the cross you brought Mary and her Son together, all families may be united in a bond of love.

5. Simon of Cyrene.

‘…carry each other’s burdens and so fulfil the law of Christ.’ Galatians 6 v 2

Lord, help us to extend help willingly to our sisters and brothers when their burdens have become too heavy to carry.

6. Veronica.

(Represents all who helped Jesus on the way of the Cross)

‘Your face, Lord, do I seek.  Do not hide your face from me.’

  Psalm 27 v 8

Lord, we pray to love others as you have loved us.

7.Jesus falls the second time.

‘Come to me, all you who are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.’

Matthew 11 v 28

Lord, be with all of us who stumble and fall, as you did on the road to Calvary, and prompt us to help others to rise and serve you.

8. Women of Jerusalem.

Jesus met ‘women who were wailing for him.’ Luke 23 v 27

Lord, we pray that when darkness engulfs us your light will guide us to extend a helping hand to another in distress.

9. Jesus falls the third time

In Gethsemane he prayed, ‘Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me; yet not my will but yours be done.’

We remember so many people searching for help in their distress.  Lord, hear our pleading, our cries of agony, and give us strength to overcome all evil.

10. Jesus is stripped.

‘though he was in the form of God…emptied himself, taking the form of a slave.’ Philippians 2 v 6, 7

Lord may we empty ourselves of all that separates us from you, that your love may be revealed in us.

11. Jesus is nailed to the cross.

He said, ‘Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.’

  John 2 v 19

Lord we pray for those in our world today whose intention is the destruction of another.

12. Jesus speaks to his mother.

As in St Mary’s east window: Jesus said, ‘Woman this is your son…(disciple) this is your mother.’ John 19 v 26

Lord we pray for a greater concern for the well-being of the elderly in our society, especially for those with no-one to care for them.

13. Jesus dies on the cross.

‘Father into your hands I commend my spirit.’ Luke 23 v 46

Heavenly Father we thank you for giving your only Son for the salvation of the world.

14. Jesus is taken down from the cross.

The Centurion said, ‘Truly this man was God’s Son.’ Matthew 27 v 54

Lord, take all whom you have called from this world into your eternal light, your life and your peace.

15. Jesus is buried.

‘..unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.’ John 12 v 24

Lord we pray that we may face death certain that we may live forever with you in Christ.

16. Jesus is risen.

Jesus said, ‘Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe.’ John 20 v 29

Bless us Lord with the overwhelming joy and peace in believing that Jesus Christ is risen from the dead!

Our Father, who art in heaven ……….

Father help us truly to believe that your Son is alive. As we have followed Jesus in his sufferings, strengthen us to follow him and to lead others to the glory of his resurrection. Help us to be Easter people who face all of life with hope and joy. Through the same Christ our Lord.  Amen.

Let us go in peace to love and serve the Lord.  In the name of Christ. Amen.
